Jim Kitchens, Attorney at Law
One the best-known attorneys in Mississippi, Jim Kitchens is highly respected in the state’s legal community for his integrity and for his highly developed courtroom skills.
An active member of the Mississippi Bar since the age of 24, he had tried two capital murder cases to verdict before his twenty-fifth birthday. He won them both.
When he was 28 he was elected district attorney for four Mississippi counties, and the voters reelected him twice. During his years as a prosecutor he built a reputation for hard work, fairness, and success in the courtroom. Returning to private law practice in 1981, he represented clients in both civil and criminal cases in state and federal courts, eventually moving his office from his home county—Copiah—to nearby Jackson, the state’s capital city.
Kitchens maintained an active law practice in Jackson for twenty years. From Jackson he served clients throughout Mississippi and in other states. On the civil side, his work was focused on representing seriously injured accident victims and the families of persons who had been killed through the negligence of others. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Attorney Jim Kitchens never stopped taking on clients who were accused of crimes in state and federal courts. During his long legal career he has handled, with remarkable success, countless homicide cases, and many other serious criminal matters. Similarly, in personal injury and wrongful death cases, he achieved outstanding results for innumerable clients.
In 2008 the already exceptional career of Jim Kitchens took an extraordinary turn when he was persuaded by other attorneys to run for a seat on his state’s highest court, the Mississippi Supreme Court. After winning that election, and also the next one, he served sixteen years as one of Mississippi’s nine supreme court justices. During those years his reputation for honesty, wisdom, and devotion to duty reached a higher level than ever before.
Today, former District Attorney and former Presiding Justice Jim Kitchens has returned to the role he knows best: Jim Kitchens, Attorney at Law. Once again, Jim Kitchens is available to serve you as your attorney. As of January 2025, Jim Kitchens is back in private practice at Kitchens Law Firm in Crystal Springs, Mississippi.
