John was born in Jackson, Mississippi.  Other than while in college, he has always lived in Crystal Springs.  He received his undergraduate degree in 2000 from the University of Southern Mississippi, where he received a German language degree.  He received his juris doctorate degree from Mississippi College School of Law in 2003. John’s practice focuses on representing individuals, not insurance companies, who have been injured as a result of someone else’s negligence.


John joined his father’s law firm, Kitchens & Ellis, in 2003, and worked alongside his father and brothers until 2008 when his father, Jim Kitchens, was elected to the Mississippi Supreme Court. In 2009, John and Dan Kitchens formed Kitchens Law Firm, P.A. in Crystal Springs.


John’s passion for law comes from his father, who taught him that everyone is entitled to justice, no matter how powerful the opponent.


John is a member of the Mississippi Bar Association, the Mississippi Association for Justice and the American Association for Justice.  He serves on the Executive Committee of the Mississippi Association for Justice and on the Board of Governors for the American Association for Justice.  John has presented seminars to other attorneys on various topics, including legal ethics, law firm management and courtroom technology.


John has received several professional awards, including being named one of Mississippi’s leading attorneys by the Mississippi Business Journal (2017); recipient of the Beyond the Call Award (MAJ – 2016); and, being named the Young Lawyer of the Year (MAJ – 2006).


For more than 20 years, John has been a volunteer camp counselor at Camp Rainbow, a summer camp for pediatric cancer patients.  He is involved with Mississippi’s Toughest Kids Foundation, a non-profit founded by his mother to build Mississippi’s only fully handicap accessible campground for children and adults with special needs.  John is very active in his community and has served in every leadership position of the Crystal Springs Chamber of Commerce, including as president. He is an active member of Crystal Springs United Methodist Church.  John and his wife, Jessica, have three children.
