What Makes Attorney Matt Kitchens Uniquely Qualified To Represent You?

Matt is a partner at Kitchens Law Firm. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1995, and his law degree, cum laude, from the Mississippi College School of Law in 2002. He then served as a law clerk at the Mississippi Supreme Court. He was licensed to practice law in Mississippi in 2002 and in North Carolina in 2008. His law practice has been a mix of civil and criminal litigation, estates and appellate work. He has represented criminal defendants charged with minor misdemeanor offenses to serious felonies, at all stages, including pre-trial, trial, appeal, state post-conviction, federal habeas corpus actions, and before the parole board. His civil practice has included personal injury and other tort cases, including mass torts; construction litigation, on behalf of individuals, and companies; condemnation cases on behalf of landowners and entities whose property was taken by public and private condemners; contract and land disputes; will contests and other probate matters; representation of banks in professional negligence cases; representation of municipalities; and, representation of attorneys and elected officials, including judges and circuit clerks, in ethical, judicial performance, professional negligence, and criminal matters. Matt has significant experience handling all phases of litigation and appeals, dealing with complex fact patterns, document-intense cases, and working with experts, co-counsel and opposing counsel and parties. His clients have ranged from very sophisticated to mentally challenged, and their causes from multi-million disputes to DUIs. Matt treats each case and client with equal respect and dignity, regardless of their status, and gives each one his all, understanding that case is the most important one in the client’s life.

Matt has served as the Municipal Court Judge of Crystal Springs, Mississippi, since 2021. He has been awarded an AV Preeminent® ranking by Martindale Hubbell. He was named one of Mississippi’s leading attorneys by the Mississippi Business Journal, and he received the Mississippi Association for Justice’s “Beyond the Call” award. He is a board member of the Chautauqua Arts Foundation, Inc., which is working with Copiah County officials to build a several-thousand seat outdoor amphitheater at Chautauqua Park in Crystal Springs.  Matt has served on the steering committee for Camp Rainbow, a summer camp for pediatric cancer patients, and has been a volunteer camp counselor at Camp Rainbow for over 20 years.  He is also very involved with the Mississippi Toughest Kids Foundation, which is building Mississippi’s only fully handicap-accessible campground for children and adults with special needs.

Matt is married to the former Casey Traxler, who is an educator. They have three children and are members of the Crystal Springs Methodist Church, where Matt has served in numerous leadership roles. Matt is an active member of the Mississippi Association for Justice and the Copiah County Bar Association.  He is licensed to practice law in all courts in Mississippi and in North Carolina, and is a member of the Mississippi and North Carolina Bar Associations.
